    The year 2002 marked ICARDA's 25th anniversary, and coincided with several honors and awards for the center's excellence in research. Research on developing high-yielding kabuli chickpea varieties that thrive in cool, wet winter conditions earned the 2002 King Baudouin Award of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), jointly with the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), which focuses on desi chickpea.

    This project thesis presents a conceptual framework for a land information system that
    would result in increased revenue collection from the land rent section of the Department
    of Lands, Ministry of Lands and Settlement. It point out the need for a comprehensive
    database containing both physical and socio-economic data supported by powerful
    analytical capabilities as the basis for effective decision making on land rent for tax
    revenue collection.

    In the light of the global discussion on

    reducing public and private expenditure on

    cadastral processes and services, this

    article reviews the transaction costs of

    land registration, based on data gathered in

    Namibia. The data show a large

    differentiation in the types of costs

    incurred in the process, as well as various

    levels of cost recovery. In addition, the

    degree to which delays in the operational

    registration processes influence the total

    cost to land developers and landowners is

    reviewed.

    This proceedings issue from a mini conference held in November 2004 presents six papers summarising attempts to establish best practice equity-share schemes on two commercial farms in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The main object of this participatory research was to test and refine land reform policy influencing the role of equity-share schemes as instruments of land and agrarian reform in South Africa.The papers presented were as follows:Land redistribution in Kwazulu-Natal: an analysis of Farmland transactions from 1997 until 2002 by Stuart Ferrer and Allan Semalulu.
