    This publication is based on a range of past studies on ICCAs conducted in several regions of the world in the last two decades, and, most recently, on 19 country level case studies. The latter were commissioned as part of a project on ICCA Recognition and Support, undertaken by the ICCA Consortium, coordinated by Kalpavriksh.

    It also incorporates some key findings of a parallel project on ICCA Legislation, also undertaken by the ICCA Consortium, and coordinated by Natural Justice.

    The Pacific Islands, a group of fourteen island nations in the South Pacific Ocean had been a source of low interest for the global powers, however, this seems to have changed as Asia draws increasing attention from the world economies in the 21st century. Despite geographical distance and unenthusiastic historical interaction, initiation of India’s development engagement with these island nations date back to as early as the year 1973.

    This Resource book is a wealthy compilation of articles with succinct discussions on the issues of the poor around access to land and other common property resources. While it does not prescribe a particular approach, the book provides valuable discussion of the land tenure situations of certain Asian, African and Latin American countries as well as strategies and tools drawn from the experiences of people’s groups to gain access and better control of their resources.

    A Study of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka

    This study was undertaken by the Rural Development Institute for the World Justice Project. The study reviews the formal and customary laws and practices governing the rights of women to inherit land in six South Asian countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka). The study includes an analysis of existing laws and customs and their impact on inheritance and land rights in all six countries. It also provides recommendations for how to design interventions that can attempt to improve women’s inheritance rights.

    The UNCCD 3rd Scientific  Conference,  held  from  9  to  12  March  2015  in  Cancún,  Mexico,  used  a novel,  participatory  approach  to  explore  the  various  forms  of  knowledge  that  link  biophysical  and  social systems,   the   vulnerabilities   of   these   systems   and   potential   pathways   to   reach   sustainable   land management.
