    Introduction of geoinformation technologies for building up a modern land management system in Georgia goes back to mid-1990s. This has been stimulated by start of land reform resulting in privatization of over 3 million agricultural land plots in whole in the entire country. These new properties were to be properly surveyed, registered and recorded in a newly established cadastral system with the aim of launching free market transactions.

    In the Mediterranean mountain areas of NW Syria, land degradation is a serious problem (Masri et al, 2005). Olive orchards dominate the landscape in Afrin area, and olive oil represents the most important cash income source for rural communities in this area. However, olive yields in many orchards have been decreasing steadily over the last 20 years. Low return to labour has resulted in livelihood insecurity, increased reliance on off-farm labour, and out-migration.

    This report describes the use of improved methodologies developed for identifying water-harvesting sites. It also provides general guidelines for determining site potential in relation to various parameters. The approach integrates multi-disciplinary knowledge, use of GIS, and verification in the field to develop and test a methodology to identify watersheds with specific characteristics – in this case, watersheds most suited to project activities within the Jordanian Badia.

    The aim of this paper is to contribute to a more holistic understanding of farmers’ decision making process for innovations in soil conservation. In this study, farmers’ decision making has been explored in the context of a mountainous olive growing area in northwest Syria, where evidences of land degradation are widespread.

    The present water report is the final product emanating from efforts by FAO, IWMI and others to document and understand the implications of the irrigation sector embarking on a wide reform process. It is intended to be a knowledge synthesis document that captures the global experiences emerging from a wide-reaching process targeting the reform of the irrigation sector. This study indicates that IMT is an approach for irrigation sector reform with the potential to improve the sust ainability of irrigation systems.
