    This paper examines willingness to pay for housing tenure security in favelas in six Brazilian states, Ceara, Paraiba, Pernambuco and in the north-east, Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo in the south-east, and Rio Grande do Sul in the south, using data from the national household survey (Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicilios, PNAD) for 2002.

    In the Latin American and Caribbean region (LAC), millions of families live under a constant threat of being evicted from the land and homes on which they live. The urbanization process across the region builds on an essentially unequal basis. As cities and urban populations grow, competing interest and demand for land also grows, be it for housing and food production, as well as for a variety for a variety of economic activities that depend on land.

    This paper addresses the serious problems involving land regulation in Brazil and stresses the urgentneed to solve the country's agrarian issues. The historical background of landholding and land propertyregulation in Brazil is analyzed in parallel with the overall institutional framework of land regulation. In addition, it interprets the connection between regulation of land use in Brazil and the various social,economic and environmental impacts. After discussion of recent land policies, a new sustainable andparticipative proposal for municipal land governance is outlined.

    Secure land tenure in rural landscapes is widely recognized as an essential foundation for achieving a range of economic development goals. However, forest areas in low and middle-income countries face particular challenges in strengthening the security of land and resource tenure. Forest peoples are often among the poorest and most politically marginalized communities in their national contexts, and their tenure systems are often based on customary, collective rights that have insufficient formal legal protection.

    2016 Testing of a New Survey Module on Perceptions of Land Tenure Security in Nine Countries

    This report presents results from nationally representative surveys with 1,000 residents aged 15 and older in eight countries — Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Greece, Indonesia, Nigeria, Peru and Tanzania — and with 3,000 residents in India. Each survey attained comprehensive coverage of both urban and rural areas of the country using multi-stage stratified cluster sampling.1 Standardized interviewer and supervisor training, as well as robust validation of data collection/data entry, help to ensure rigorous quality standards.
