In Sierra Leone, the well-being and livelihoods of many people, particularly the rural poor, are based on secure and equitable access to land, fisheries and forests. Increasing pressure on these resources in recent years has led to an escalation of conflict over access to natural resources.
Supporting Implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests (VGGTs) is a programme that provides countries with a framework for best practices in tenurerelated policies, laws, regulations, strategies and practices. Its Phase 1 was implemented from October 2012 to June 2016 as a multi-donor programme overseen by a steering committee and managed by the VG-Tenure Secretariat hosted by FAO.
The relevance of the sustainable use, management and conservation of aquatic genetic resources (AqGR) for food and agriculture is relatively well known and documented, but there is still an urgent need to preserve and better manage existing aquatic diversity to enhance its contribution to food security, nutrition and livelihoods. Aquatic genetic resources for food and agriculture include thousands of species, which are found in the world’s oceans, seas, lakes, reservoirs, rivers, rice paddies and other wetlands, and also in aquaculture facilities in marine, brackish and fresh waters.
The Guidelines promote responsible governance of tenure of land, fisheries and forests, with respect to all forms of tenure. Their overarching goals are to achieve food security for all and support the progressive realization of the right to adequate food in the context of national food security.
This study assesses the jurisdictional, procedural and remedial aspects of the grievance mechanisms that are used in land disputes in Sierra Leone. It helps to better understand the types and effectiveness of non-judicial grievance mechanisms in the country. It further proposes some options for the rationalization and coordination of the mechanisms that are now at work.
This document provides a clear and comprehensive account for the application of marine spatial planning (MSP) within the Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) region. It builds on regional technical workshops, held under the auspices of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), aimed principally at improving the prospects for fisheries and aquaculture in the Near East. Marine spatial planning provides a step-by-step process that allows for the cooperative integration of the major marine uses and users within a defined marine area.
The VGGTs provide a paramount opportunity for reversing gender inequalities in agriculture and for promoting more gender-equitable governance of land tenure.
The focus of this review has been on both documenting the general resilience of many fish resources to climatic variability and its underestimation in livelihood importance, including in protracted crisis situations, but also on enhancing the potential supply of fish from dryland areas by better use of the available water bodies, and in particular from small reservoirs.
This poster illustrates the findings of a situational analysis on post-harvest systems conducted in 2013 and 2014 in the Volta Basin, a shared water body in West Africa through the NEPAD-FAO Fish Programme (NFFP), within the framework of a collaborative undertaking between FAO, the Planning and Coordinating Agency (NPCA) of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD).
This publication is a compilation of presentations and recommendations resulting from the Global Conference on Inland Fisheries: Freshwater, Fish and the Future, convened at FAO HQ in January 2015 and is part of an MOU signed with Michigan State University. Contents include scientific papers on inland fisheries from a global perspective that cover biological and socio-cultural assessments, drivers and governance issues. Ten steps to responsible inland fisheries are included along with recommendations for their implementation.
