    This paper provides a brief synthesis of research conducted on gender in irrigation, and the tools and frameworks used in the past to promote improvement for women in on-farm agricultural water management. It then presents results from the pilot of the Gender in Irrigation Learning and Improvement Tool (GILIT) in locations in Malawi and Uzbekistan in 2015.

    In recent decades, many countries in sub-Saharan Africa have pursued national water permit systems, derived from the colonial era and reinforced by “global best practice.” These systems have proved logistically impossible to manage and have worsened inequality in water access. A new study conducted by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and Pegasys Institute, with support from the UK government, traces the origins of these systems, and describes their implementation and consequences for rural smallholders in five countries – Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

    The AQUASTAT Programme was initiated with a view to presenting a comprehensive picture of water resources and irrigation in developing countries and providing systematic, upto-date and reliable information on water for agriculture and rural development. This report presents the results of the most recent survey carried out in the 53 countries of Africa, and it analyses the changes that have occurred in the ten years since the first survey. Following the AQUASTAT methodology, the survey relied as much as possible on country-based statistics and information.

    Access to safe water and sanitation and sound management of freshwater ecosystems are at the very core of sustainable development. This is the aim of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which includes approaches to water management supported by international cooperation, capacity building and stakeholder participation.<p></p><p></p>Indicator 6.4.1 has been designed to assess the economic and social use of water resources in terms of the value added when they are used in different sectors of the economy.

    IN response to an on-line survey, 76 project leaders and staff gave CPWF Phase 1 a

    generally favorable review. Respondents came from 68 CPWF projects in 45 countries on

    three continents. The survey sought to help learn what went well in Phase 1, what did not

    go so well and can be improved in Phase 2.

    Nearly three-quarters of respondents felt that they had achieved different research results,

    outcomes and impacts as a result of participation in the CPWF than otherwise possible from
