    Reports & Research
    December, 2015
    Uzbekistan

This Country Profile on Uzbekistan is the eighteenth in the series. The country profile programme continues to focus on specific challenges or achievements in the housing and land management sectors that are particularly relevant to the country under review. In the case of Uzbekistan, these issues include housing policies and government support measures for the construction of housing in rural areas; the increased demand for housing of the fast-growing population; and the depleted urban infrastructure inherited from Soviet times.

Landlessness and Insecurity: Obstacles to Reintegration in Afghanistan
    Reports & Research
    February, 2011
    Afghanistan

The challenges faced by more than five and a half million Afghan refugees who have returned since 2002 receive scant regard in most international media or official proceedings concerning Afghanistan. Attention is primarily focused on Afghanistan’s intensified armed conflict, NATO’s withdrawal planning, and faltering peace efforts. Moreover, despite the millions of refugees who have returned in the past ten years, Afghans still comprise the world’s largest refugee population.

Rural-based economic activity can be just as effective for poverty reduction as that of urban sectors. Since the 1990s, rural transformation has lifted nearly as many people out of poverty as urban development. Many more will be able to climb out of poverty if greater priority is given to public investments in rural areas.

This study is part of a larger study on dairy marketing in Ethiopia, and concentrates on the producers'end of the marketing chain. Specifically, the markets of first sale used by dairy producers were identified and the marketing patterns of three categories of dairy producers (intra-urban, peri-urban and peasant) were investigated. The study was carried out on a sample of 173 dairy producers between February and July 1986, using structured questionnaires.

Thirsty and hungry cities are posing significant challenges for the urban-rural interface ranging from food security to inter-sectoral water allocation. Not only is the supply of resources to urban centres a growing challenge in low-income countries, but even more is the urban return flow, as investments in waste management and sanitation, ie the ‘ultimate food waste’, are not able to keep pace with population growth. And where polluted water is used in irrigation to feed the cities, food safety is becoming a crucial component of food security.
