Wetlands occur extensively across the Nile Basin and support the livelihoods ofmillions of people. Despite their importance, there are big gaps in the knowledge about the current status of these ecosystems, and how populations in the Nile use them. A better understanding is needed on the ecosystem services provided by the difl:erent types of wetlands in the Nile, and how these contribute to local livelihoods.

Much of the native forest in the highlands of western Kenya has been converted to agricultural land in order to feed the growing population, and more land is being cleared. In tropical Africa, this land use change results in progressive soil degradation, as the period of cultivation increases. Both rates and variation in infiltration, soil carbon concentration and other soil parameters are influenced by management within agricultural systems, but they have rarely been well documented in East Africa.

This Working Paper summarizes research conducted as part of the AgWater Solutions Project in Ethiopia between 2009 and 2012. Researchers from the AgWater Solutions Project conducted a situation analysis in 2009, which identified a range of options deemed to be technically feasible, affordable and practical for smallholder farmers: water-lifting technologies, groundwater for agriculture and manual well drilling, community-based watershed management, on-farm water storage, small reservoirs and rainwater harvesting.

This Working Paper summarizes research conducted as part of the AgWater Solutions Project in Zambia from 2009 to 2012. Approximately 48 million hectares (Mha) of land in Zambia are suitable for agricultural use. An estimated 67% of the Zambian labor force is employed in the agriculture sector. Researchers from the AgWater Solutions Project examined ways of improving the motor pump supply chain, how to make better use of small reservoirs and improving the function of horticultural markets. Researchers also explored gendered aspects of agricultural systems.

The agriculture sector has great potential to contribute to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions through changes in agricultural management and land use. However, the technical potential for agricultural mitigation has yet to translate into actual emission reductions due to considerable constraints to the generation of emission offsets through agricultural projects.
