    Jordan

Due to recurring droughts and severe overgrazing, Jordan’s dry rangelands are exceptionally prone to degradation. Establishing both restoration and sustainable rangeland management practices are crucial to reverse the negative impacts on the ecosystem. However, a primary estimate of the native baseline’s water and sediment fluxes is essential to properly target a sustainable transition from degraded to a potentially revegetated landscape status.

    Cameroon, Africa, Middle Africa

In sub-Saharan Africa, intensification of agriculture and rational use of arable land are essential for long-term growth (Gros, 1979, Johnston, 1990, Oluf et al., 990). Extensive cultivation methods and the population explosion are pushing the limits of cultivated land every day; deforestation accelerates; the productive capacity of the land is reduced

In the United States 20% of privately owned rangelands are vulnerable to accelerated soil loss. Estimated annual costs of direct and indirect damage caused by soil erosion in the United States is $27 billion dollars. More than 50% of Asia and 70% of Middle Eastern rangelands are degraded. Exact estimates of economic costs and total area degraded is unknown; however, costs may be significantly higher than in the United States due to the extent of degradation/desertification in these regions.

    Mozambique, Africa, Southern Africa

There is an increasing interest among researchers, practitioners and donors in using agricultural innovation system approaches to reach development outcomes. Limited practical experiences have been shared on the dynamics of these innovation processes and how project partners have dealt with that. The objective of this paper is therefore to share experiences from a smallholder livestock development project – the imGoats project in Mozambique – by reflecting on the dynamics of innovation processes in the project.

Animal manure is of vital importance to soil-fertility maintenance in semi-arid West Africa due to its intrinsic value as a soil amendment and because of the low level of inorganic fertiliser use. This paper provides a regional overview of manure utilisation for food crop production. Results of experimental trials and on-farm studies are reviewed to evaluate the agronomic and economic effectiveness of livestock manure as a source of nutrients for millet and sorghum production.
