While an increase in the size and number of conservation areas is expected as part of global environmental commitments, at the same time, Protected Area Downgrading, Downsizing, and Degazettement, or PADDD, is becoming more frequent worldwide. This paper analyzes the causal relationships between land claims and human settlements on the one hand and the downsizing process of a protective forest in southeastern Ecuador on the other.

Command-and-control policies are often criticized as insufficient to tackle tropical deforestation. Over the past two decades, both academics and policy-makers have promoted incentive-based policies, notably REDD+ (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation), as attractive alternatives to curb forest loss, while also potentially contributing to the poverty reduction of forest-dwelling populations. Governments have been the driving force behind the largest incentive-based forest conservation programs in Latin America.

Land use and land cover were mapped between 3500 and 5000 meters above sea level m.a.s.l. in the Río Chambo basin in south-central Ecuador from Landsat MSS, TM, ETM and OLI imagery acquired between 1979 and 2014. The area mapped has been dominated by páramo and a variety of agricultural land uses since 1979. The main land-use transitions have been from páramo to agriculture, native forest to páramo and agriculture, and agriculture back to páramo.

This assessment focuses on three main services that plant protection impacts on soil can significantly affect: provisioning services for food, fibre, and fuel supply and regulating services for water quality and erosion. The Global Soil Partnership (GSP) at its 2016 plenary session requested that the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS) complete “an assessment at global level of the impact of Plant Protection Products on soil functions and ecosystems”. It is an activity under the strategic objective SO2 and indirectly contributing to all FAO strategic objectives.

This article explains how the family productive strategies of farmer settlers and their perceptions of the forest influence the rate of deforestation. This particular approach, based on the analysis of endogenous processes, seeks to contextualize and understand how farmers operate within a context of «forest transition», as a result of significant economic changes, market expansion and road infrastructuredevelopment.

El artículo hace un balance sobre los aspectos principales que se deducen del proceso de expansión de la frontera agrícola en la Amazonía ecuatoriana con énfasis en el nororiente en donde se desarrollan actividades de explotación petrolera desde la década de 1960. Reflecting on both the Mining Code of 1886 and the subsequent amendments administered to said code in 1892, this investigation endeavors to evaluate the immense impact that its implementation caused in Ecuador’s geographic space. These laws inaugurated criteria for the demarcation of mining properties; noteworthy acts that strengthened the state’s dominion over subsoil and the obtention of perks concerning concessionaires. The adoption of new mining law principles facilitated the arrival of foreign investors interested in the exploitation of gold-bearing mineral deposits.
