This was a presentation at a Workshop on Development of an Interim Framework for the National Land Use Classification Standard, Methodology and Symbology for South Africa. It shows why land use and land cover are not the same, why land use often cannot be determined from imagery alone, and why land use, zoning and planning are not the same.

The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform Strategic Plan 2015 – 2020 is a national sectoral policy whose mission is to create and maintain an equitable and sustainable land dispensation, and act as a coordinator and catalyst in rural development to ensure sustainable rural livelihoods, decent work and continued social and economic advancement of all South Africans.Improved food security is amongst the policy goals.
