In Europe, grassland is one of the dominant forms of land use. Within 20 years, the area of permanent grasslands and pastures in Western Europe has declined by 12%. Semi-natural grasslands are often hot spots of biodiversity and are threatened both by intensive farming and by the abandonment of farmland in marginal areas. In this review, we show that biodiversity, climate change, C sequestration and farming systems issues are highly interconnected in grassland ecosystems.

Changes of vegetal cover in the Aragonese western Pyrenees are shown throughout the last 50 years. The evolution is characterized by a generalised revegetation process with an advance of shrubs and forests. The medium and low slopes show the most intense revegetation as a consequence of the agricultural abandonment and the decrease of the livestock pressure. Nevertheless, few vegetation changes are recorded in cultivated lands and the pastures located above timberline.

Much is reported about the destruction of natural forests and the consequences for global warming, while on the other hand, exotic plantations in some regions struggle to gain public acceptance. The earth's population is projected to rise to around 9 billion by 2050, with a concomitant increase in demand for forest products. Inevitably, forests in general, and managed forest in particular, will be called on to provide an ever-increasing proportion of local supplies and the international wood trade.

E nvironmental planning is an instrument for the operationalisation of the precautionary principle in environmental law and, to this end, must rely on maps depicting the spatial patterns of ecological attributes of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and of environmental change effects, respectively. In this context, different mapping techniques are presented by example of three case studies covering terrestrial, coastal and marine environments. The first case study was selected to demonstrate how to compute an ecological land classification of Germany by means of CART.

In this research, we propose a method for describing rural landscapes in peri urban areas and evaluating their impact on house and land prices. This method matches quantitative geography and econometric methods used for hedonic analysis. A geographical model is used for producing variables describing the landscape an observer can look at when located in a specific house or a land parcel. This model takes account of these parts of the landscape that are hidden by houses, buildings, hills, forests,. . .

Land cover and land use changes affect ecological landscape functions and processes. Land use changes mainly caused by human activities, is a common reason for wetlands degradation worldwide. Lake Stymfalia, located at Peloponnese, southern Greece, is an ancient wetland with a great ecological value. Lake Stymfalia has been severely degraded and transformed during the past 60 years due to agricultural activities in the surrounding areas and watercourses alterations.
