    Informal settlements represent a challenging operational context for local government service providers due to precarious contextual conditions. Location choice and land procurement for public infrastructure raise the complicated question: who has the right to occupy, control, and use a piece of land in informal settlements? There is currently a dearth of intelligence on how to identify well-located land for public infrastructure, spatially and with careful consideration for safeguarding the claimed rights and preventing conflicts.

    In an era of global warming, long-standing challenges for rural populations, including land inequality, poverty and food insecurity, risk being exacerbated by the effects of climate change. Innovative and effective approaches, such as Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA), are required to alleviate these environmental pressures without hampering efficiency.

    La gestión sostenible de la vida silvestre es objeto de considerable atención en el debate internacional debido a su importancia para la conservación de la biodiversidad, la seguridad humana, los medios de subsistencia y la seguridad alimentaria. Las poblaciones locales han gestionado las especies silvestres durante milenios, incluso a través de la caza. En este número se presentan ejemplos suficientes para demostrar que en la era moderna también es factible la gestión sostenible de la vida silv estre.

    En este estudio se evaluó la sostenibilidad de los agroecosistemas tradicionales y alternativos de producción de maíz en tres Ejidos de la Región Selva de Chiapas, mediante la aplicación del enfoque agroecológico (MESMIS). El estudio se realizó en dos ciclos agrícolas: milpa y tornamil. En el primero se evaluaron los sistemas de roza-tumba-quema (R‑T‑Q), sin quema y en sucesión de nescafé (Mucuna deeringiana Bort.). En el segundo ciclo se analizaron tres sistemas sin quema con diferentes periodos de nescafé, y se modificó la densidad poblacional para analizar su efecto sobre la producción.

    Does forest tenure matter? In what way does it matter? What are the links among tenure, sustainable forest management (SFM) and poverty alleviation (PA)? This paper presents the main findings of research that was conducted by FAO and partners from the Asia Forest Partnership with the aim of analysing and understanding the role of tenure arrangements, their enabling impacts and their limitations. The paper presents a summary of different tenure instruments’ performance in supporting SFM and PA, and provides recommendations for more effective forest tenure systems.
