Presents some preliminary results on the impact of the economic crisis on farmers’ livelihood and forest use, based on fieldwork in four provinces in Indonesia (Riau, West and East Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi). Stresses the great variation throughout the country, and the volatility of the situation. Price data reveal that some groups of export crops-oriented farmers enjoyed a short-term gain during the first 2-3 quarters of 1998. Soaring food prices and a stronger rupiah since October 1998 have, however, gradually made real prices move towards their pre-crisis levels.

...The main purpose of this paper is to examine legal measures taken to recognize
indigenous groups and provide for their ongoing operation; the paper starts, therefore, from an

Journal Articles & BooksDecember, 1998IndonesiaThis report describes Reduced-Impact Logging(RIL) which will be implemented in the lowland and hill dipterocarp forest of the Bulungan Model Forest project in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. It is anticipated that through the implementation and supervision of the RIL practices described in this document, the timber concession operators (INHUTANI II) can expect to: reduce disturbances to soil and residual vegetation by at least 50% in comparison with conventional logging operations where these guidelines are not applied; limit overall direct impacts to the forest

El seminario cont con la presencia de 35 participantes en representacin de organizaciones (y de tipos de organizacin, regiones geogrficas y disciplinas) diferentes. A discussion of the concerns of the environmental movement in the Asia-Pacific region with reference to biological diversity, forest loss, indigenous and forest-dependant people and climate change. The environmental perspective of different aspects of forestry development in the region is elucidated. Three possible scenarios for the future are presented depending on the level of achievement of environmental goals.
