The global food system will experience an unprecedented combination of pressures over the next 40 years. Global population size will increase and competition for land, water and energy will intensify, while the effects of climate change will become increasingly apparent. Over this period, globalisation will continue, exposing the food system to novel economic and political pressures. This final report of the Foresight Global Food and Farming Futures Project argues that decisive action needs to take place now. The report identifies five considerable challenges ahead:

This paper applies the principles of water-use accounts, to the Karkheh River basin in Iran.

The northern part of the Basin where the Karkheh and its tributaries rise is mountainous, cooler, and wetter. The River spills out on to the hotter, lower semi-arid plains at its southern end. Precipitation, mainly in winter, varies from 400-500 mm in the upper part of the Basin falling to about 230 mm in the lower reaches.

IN response to an on-line survey, 76 project leaders and staff gave CPWF Phase 1 a

generally favorable review. Respondents came from 68 CPWF projects in 45 countries on

three continents. The survey sought to help learn what went well in Phase 1, what did not

go so well and can be improved in Phase 2.

Nearly three-quarters of respondents felt that they had achieved different research results,

outcomes and impacts as a result of participation in the CPWF than otherwise possible from

The Karkheh Basin Focal Project was designed to collect and organize baseline information

for future researchers and to highlight future research needs. All collected data is available

in the IDIS system. The specific research findings and recommendations for the basin are

    1) The use of non-agricultural water measures is likely to be a more effective solution to

remaining rural poverty in the Karkheh basin and Iran; 2) In the short to medium term,

agricultural water policy and research should focus on improvements in physical water

The CPWF was designed to be different. Developed in response to a call for change in a previous round of Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) system

reform, the CPWF was intended to foster cross-CGIAR cooperation and find ways to bring in new partners. Over time the CPWF has successfully broadened the CGIAR’s sources of

innovative research on water and food. Through its broad partnerships, the program conducts research that leads to positive impact on the poor and to policy change. The CPWF does this by

Poverty in Turkey has declined significantly between 2003 and 2006, as a result of rapid poverty reduction in urban areas. In the same time period, the reduction in poverty in rural areas has been slow or non-existent. As a result, the relative risk of poverty has increased in this time period for those employed in agricultural sector, living in rural areas and in large households.

Increasing women’s access to land is crucial to fight hunger and poverty. However, gender disparities in land access remain significant in most countries, regardless of their level of development. A new FAO database helps to understand the factors that prevent women from accessing land; and to design better policies to effectively address this situation.

Land administration and cadastral systems are playing a crucial global role in safeguarding the security of access to land and natural resources. Information technology systems have become basic elements of these systems everywhere. Introduction of automation to land administration has improved systems’ efficiency, standardisation and accessibility, which in turn have contributed to responsible land governance. Developing country land administrations are, however, often inefficient and poorly structured.
