The protection of fertile soils is a precondition for sustainable development. In the final document of the conference of the United Nations on sustainable development in June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro (Rio+20 Conference), the international community thus agreed to strive for a “land degradation neutral world”. The legal study by Ecologic Institute, Berlin, firstly scrutinizes some national legislation (Germany/EU, USA and Brazil) in order to identify legal instruments which are suitable for the implementation of the goal of a “land degradation neutral world”.

This publication contains the papers presented at the Expert Consultation on Issues in Water Law Reform, convened by FAO in Pretoria, Republic of South Africa, 3 to 5 June 1997. The FAO Technical Workshop on “Best-practices for the implementation and reporting of SDG indicator 14.4.1 – Percentage of biologically sustainable fish stocks” was held in Rome, Italy, from 21 to 24 November 2017. The purpose of the Workshop was to raise awareness of SDG 14.4.1’s significance and global reporting process, provide technical training to national practitioners on the analytical methods to produce Indicator 14.4.1, and look for examples of datasets and indicators from which best practices can be compiled.
