    Formulation of cost-effective preventive control programmes for helminth infection in small ruminants should be based on sound epidemiological knowledge of the time relationship between contamination of pastures and the seasonal availability of infective larvae in a given geographic area. Epidemiological data generated from an on-station experiment involving the use of tracer lambs and monitoring of pasture contamination levels in the central Ethiopian highlands clearly showed a distinct seasonal pattern of nematode infection in sheep.

    Maize (Zea mays L.) and bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are commonly grown in association in eastern and southern Africa. Results from 64-fertilizer response trials conducted in Kenya were used to study the relationship between maize monoculture response to fertilizer nitrogen and phosphorus and the intercrop response. The intercrop was more productive that the monoculture with no fertilizer applied, but overall responses of systems to applied nutrients did not differ. Maize, both in monoculture and intercropped, responded more frequently to applied N than did the intercropped bean.

The second part of the report covers topics on assessing the efficacy of immunization against tick-borne diseases, evaluating delivery systems for the control of tick-borne diseases and measuring the impact of immunization on livestock productivity. The paper ends with a discussion on coordination, collaboration and planning.
