    As part of the efforts to find sustainable solutions to complex land tenure issues, multi-stakeholder platforms (MSPs) create an inclusive forum where actors can discuss problems and propose solutions to improve governance of tenure and provide better access to natural resources. This publication highlights how MSPs at regional, national and local level demonstrate forward thinking, including innovative practices and approaches to respond to the above mentioned social challenges, for the benefit of all.

    About two-thirds of the developing world’s 3 billion rural people live in about 475 million small farm households, working on land plots smaller than 2 hectares. 1 Many are poor and food insecure and have limited access to markets and services. Their choices are constrained, but they farm their land and produce food for a substantial proportion of the world’s population. Besides farming they have multiple economic activities, often in the informal economy, to contribute towards their small incomes.

    In this 2012 edition of Moving Forward, FAO Forestry is pleased to present a selection of the work it undertook in the 2010-2011 biennium for the benefit of the global forestry community. In all regions of the world, the Programme is helping to implement sustainable forest management and boost the livelihoods of forest-dependent people.     The focus of Strategic Objective 2 stems from FAO’s vision for sustainable agriculture, which is at the heart of the 2030 Agenda. This evaluation assessed FAO’s efforts in promoting integrated approaches for making agriculture, forestry and fisheries more productive and sustainable. These efforts have proven to be highly relevant in countries where agriculture and food systems face urgent sustainability challenges.

    The Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT) promotes secure tenure rights and equitable access to land, fisheries and forests as a means of eradicating hunger and poverty, supporting sustainable development and enhancing the environment. The guidelines were officially endorsed by the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) on 11 May 2012. 2. The Guidelines serve as a reference and set of principles and internationally accepted norms or practices for the responsible governance of tenure.
