    Livestock use and degrade much water in the Nile River Basin. New research suggests that integrated development and management of water and livestock resources will conserve water and increase the profitability and environmental sustainability of investments by governments, development agencies, and farmers.

    Practical opportunities exist to enhance food security, reduce poverty, and foster benefit sharing. Institutions responsible for water resources may benefit from partnering with the livestock sector when developing water resources.

    Desde 1996, la FAO y el Gobierno de Italia han colaborado en un ambicioso proyecto que se realiza a lo largo de la cuenca del r?o m?s largo del mundo. ?Productos informativos sobre los recursos h?dricos de la cuenca del Nilo? fue el nombre con el que se design? la suma global de tres proyectos consecutivos llevados a cabo en diez pa?ses de la cuenca del Nilo. Tras su conclusión oficial, en octubre de 2011, el proyecto fue entregado a la Iniciativa de la Cuenca del Nilo, una organización intergubernamental creada en 1999 que tiene su sede en Entebbe (Uganda).

    This report describes the project of strengthening the ability of the governments of the Nile Basin states to take informed decisions with regard to water resources policy and management in the Nile Basin. This objective to be achieved through the development of information products that integrate technical water resources and water use data with other relevant data, including in particular demographic, socio-economic and environmental data.

    FAO’s full office in Eritrea became operational in 1995, when the field programme at the time was dedicated to recovery from the devastation caused by the protracted war of independence. The focus was on the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the agricultural sector and the resettlement of returning displaced people. Following this reconstruction and rehabilitation period, Eritrea began building its vision of development and set about capacitating and building public sector institutions to implement this vision.
