The Netherlands became an FAO member in 1945, and has since been a valuable resource partner on multiple FAO projects and programmes. The Netherlands shares FAO’s continued interest in developing programmes for the financial inclusion of family farmers, especially women, by treating them as entrepreneurs and promoting their access to better credit and resilience. The Netherlands is also one of FAO’s largest donors for locust control issues.

Unprecedented pressures on land have been created as new areas are cultivated, taken over by expanding urban centres or are abandoned due to degradation, climate change and conflict. These developments have strained the rules, processes and institutions that determine which land resources are used, by whom, for how long and under what conditions.

As this book shows, farmer field schools have proven to be a very useful approach for helping African farmers to improve how they manage their land and water. Numerous projects throughout Africa have shown that they result in improved soils, better yields and higher incomes for farmers. The document summarizes some of these experiences, points out successes, and – equally important – shows constraints and gaps that need to be addressed.

Cooperation between the Republic of Djibouti and FAO has steadily increased since the representation was opened in 2008. Assistance has covered a range of areas concerning agricultural, livestock and fisheries production. Over the past decade, the country has been affected by a series of major droughts which have severely affected livelihoods, particularly in rural communities. FAO continues to strengthen its collaboration with Djibouti, emphasizing resilience and sustainable development initiatives, including projects targeting agro-pastoralists.
