Pastoralists in Isiolo county in northern Kenya feel under siege;with their way of life under threat. Isiolo has been the home of the Waso Boran pastoralists for many decades;but attacks from neighbouring Somali herders;encroachments by agriculturalists from Meru;expansion of conservancies and planned road;pipeline and resort city mega-projects are affecting all pastoral livelihoods;creating many new risks and environmental uncertainties. study to characterize existing adaptive strategies and shifts in smallholder agro-pastoralists in relation to changes in land use and land subdivisions was carried out. A total of 48.9% of respondent indicated that there had been a shift in the adaptive strategies where unreliable rainfall, better access to land and water, acquisition of skills, shortage of pastures and proximity to wildlife habitats were the main factors influencing the shifts.

Pastoralists traditionally relied on herd mobility to cope with drought. In the pastoral areas of Kajiado,
Kenya this strategy is now threatened by increased individual land ownership as compared to
communal access. Drought frequency as related to El-Nino and Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is
predicated to increase with climate change. The aim of the study was investigate the use of herd
mobility strategy in the ENSO related 1999/2000 la Nina induced drought under different land tenure

Climate change impacts livelihoods adversely in dry-lands of Northern Kenya in terms of longer and harsher droughts, shorter and intense precipitation and floods. Climate change interlocks with peoples life-worlds differently for different reasons. Understanding the foregoing can inform and make policy more relevant. What are the Samburu peoples discernment of climate change and how have they confronted it? The paper examines the Samburu perspectives of climate change and the resulting coping, adaptation mechanisms and practice, and their prospects.

Rangelands throughout sub-Saharan Africa are currently undergoing two major pressures: climate change (through altered rainfall and seasonality patterns) and habitat fragmentation (brought by land use change driven by land demand for agriculture and conservation). Here we explore these dimensions, investigating the impact of land use change decisions, by pastoralists in southern Kenya rangelands, on human well-being and animal densities using an agent-based model.

This paper addresses pastoral resilience by drawing out the coping strategies and mechanisms utilized by the Maasai Pastoralists through a food system approach, based on the study findings of an anthropological study of pastoralism as a food system in Laikipia County, Rift Valley, Kenya. The co-existence and interactions of pastoralism as a food system with other types of food systems in Laikipia, such as large-scale horticulture, justified the selection of the study site.

To support improved rangeland resource management and monitoring for nomadic pastoralists in northern Kenya, we used a task-based mobile application to incentivize pastoralists provide more than 100,000 surveys containing information on local rangeland, water and livestock resources. In this contribution we explore the potential of combining this information with remote sensing data for improved characterization of rangeland resource use and accessibility through integration of local socio-ecological knowledge into land cover mapping methods.
