    This brochure presents FAO’s work on mainstreaming biodiversity as a cross-cutting theme in the agriculture, fisheries and forestry sectors. It provides examples of on-the-ground activities and highlights relevant international mechanisms. It shows how biodiversity and ecosystems benefit people in countless ways by providing food, clean water, shelter and raw materials for our basic needs. Agriculture is a major user of biodiversity but also has the potential to contribute to the protection of biodiversity.

    The focus of Strategic Objective 2 stems from FAO’s vision for sustainable agriculture, which is at the heart of the 2030 Agenda. This evaluation assessed FAO’s efforts in promoting integrated approaches for making agriculture, forestry and fisheries more productive and sustainable. These efforts have proven to be highly relevant in countries where agriculture and food systems face urgent sustainability challenges.

    This paper examines poverty and deforestation in developing countries as linked problems and focuses on policies that can favour poverty alleviation in forested regions. The paper encompasses two elements: analysis of the spatial coincidence between poverty and forests, and proposed policy options for reducing poverty in forested areas.
