    Target 1.4 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) seeks to ensure that “all men and women, particularly the poor and vulnerable, have equal rights … to ownership and control over land and other forms of property.”

    This target’s inclusion under SDG Goal 1, on “ending poverty in all its forms,” signifies a new global recognition that secure land tenure should be a central strategy in combating poverty. However, this land agenda has not been prominent in recent SDG reporting processes of governments.

    Monitoring reports were prepared in six Asian countries to understand the nature, causes, and impacts of land and resource conflicts, and to highlight the human rights issues intertwined with them. This publication likewise provides an overview of some of the available conflict response and resolution mechanisms in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Nepal, and the Philippines, and outlines recommended actions for addressing land conflicts.

The cases highlight how farmers, women, and indigenous peoples have been displaced from their lands; and how ecosystems have been destroyed, food security undermined and livelihoods lost. This publication also features the recommended principles of responsible agricultural investment (rai) governing land investments in the Philippines recognizing the importance of farming and fishing communities in the country.
