    There are numerous global, regional, national and even subnational targets for increasing forest area and forest restoration. In light of these global targets and emerging ambitious national commitments, it is imperative to develop low-cost strategies and techniques for landscape restoration. The most widely used restoration strategies involving planting of tree seedlings are often costly and their application for restoring vast expanses of degraded forest lands in the region may be limited.

    This edition of Unasylva comes in the wake of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20,which, among other things, produced a document called The Future We Want. In it, world leaders renewed their commitment to sustainable development and stated that “the wide range of products and services that forests provide creates opportunities to address many of the most pressing sustainable development challenges”. Foresters should be pleased with these words because they indica te that forests are starting to get the recognition they deserve.

    This publication contains the papers presented at the Expert Consultation on Issues in Water Law Reform, convened by FAO in Pretoria, Republic of South Africa, 3 to 5 June 1997. The Expert Consultation was the first activity under, and served as a launch for, the FAO-funded and -executed project of technical assistance to the Republic of South Africa, TCP/SAF/6711 "Review of water legislation". It was arranged and timed so as to provide a comparative water law and administration input to the drafting of a National Water Bill, then underway.

    The FAO Technical Workshop on “Best-practices for the implementation and reporting of SDG indicator 14.4.1 – Percentage of biologically sustainable fish stocks” was held in Rome, Italy, from 21 to 24 November 2017. The purpose of the Workshop was to raise awareness of SDG 14.4.1’s significance and global reporting process, provide technical training to national practitioners on the analytical methods to produce Indicator 14.4.1, and look for examples of datasets and indicators from which best practices can be compiled.
