    This publication discusses the relevance to land and agriculture of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGP BHR), and provides an overview of the state of the UNGP BHR’s implementation in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Nepal, and the Philippines. While significant efforts were undertaken by human rights institutions and CSOs to promote UNGP BHR, this book outlines areas of action at country and regional levels to mainstream UNGP BHR.

    Land transformation has been at the centre of the economic growth of post-colonial Asia. In the 1990s, many Asian countries embraced economic liberalization and speculative business interests in land began to replace the state’s control of land for developmental purposes. The growing demand for land by corporations and private investors has fuelled several regional land rush waves in Asia, bringing them directly in conflict with communities that require these lands for their occupations and survival.

    This publication compiles land grab cases documented by LWA partners in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, and Philippines. The cases highlight how farmers, women, and indigenous peoples have been displaced from their lands; and how ecosystems have been destroyed, food security undermined and livelihoods lost. This publication also features the recommended principles of responsible agricultural investment (rai) governing land investments in the Philippines recognizing the importance of farming and fishing communities in the country.

    This report is a summary of the 2013 CSO Land Reform Monitoring papers in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, and the  Philippines. It focuses on land conflicts including killings, harassments, land-related detainments, and evictions experienced in the seven countries. It also includes interventions and principles which ANGOC and LWA call for the government and institutions to adhere to in addressing such issues.
