This report answers the questions expressed in a motion Polderman. This motion asks about the consequences of abolishing the existing pig and poultry rights (animal production rights). In this study, we first address the creation of these production rights in the framework of the mineral policy (or manure policy) and the significance of these rights. Then insight is provided about the expected development of the extent of pig and poultry farming, bases on the situation whereby animal production rights and the milk quota end in 2015. The environmental impact is also calculated.

This dissertation has two objectives. The first objective is to link conceptually individual decisions and land-use/cover change (LUCC) patterns in rural regions. The second objective is to use these concepts to explore the influence of policy on LUCC as a response of farmers' decisions. To achieve these objectives, different approaches are used. Firstly, agent typologies are used to simplify and allocate the regional diversity of farmers' decisions. Secondly, an agent-based approach is used to link individual decisions and LUCC patterns in a regional model.

Rice-fish farming: A food security alternative Rice-fish farming is a biological or clean production system that consists of the simultaneous farming of rice and fish on the same land and at the same time; in other words, in the plots flooded for rice cultivation. This paper analyses issues that affect the role of agriculture as a source of economic development, rural livelihoods and environmental services. Using experiences of land expansion in Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, and sub-Saharan Africa, it assesses the extent to which recent demand for land differs from earlier processes of area expansion and identifies the current challenges, in terms of land governance, institutional capacity and communities’ awareness of their rights.
