Nevertheless, it has a historical lack of governance over its lands, failing to provide secure land rights and to control the extensive frauds resulting in public and private land grabs. The objective of this study is to depict evidence of these land grabs and propose a typology for analyzing them.

This article shows the case of the cerrado region where because of a lack of clear property rights the land market is completely immobilized.

It started with the land occupation of Piauí's cerrado region and the creation of its land market in the seventies by the State Development Agency (CONDEPI), which sold with symbolic prices very large properties for cattle and fruit production. The major agricultural products of Tanganyika are subject to a degree of control under the various commodity boards established for that purpose. The degree of control varies from direct participation in marketing in the case of cotton lint and' seed, to the control of production and intermediary arrangements for marketing in the case of pyrethrum and purely advisory capacity in the case of sisal. Ever since the oil, financial and food crises of 2008, sub-Saharan Africa has witnessed a marked increase in large-scale investment in agricultural land. The drivers of this investment are varied and include growing food, water and energy insecurity as well as social and economic interests of investors and recipient countries. The shape of these investments and their eventual outcomes are equally influenced by the existing land and water governance systems in the host countries.
