    This paper analyses issues that affect the role of agriculture as a source of economic development, rural livelihoods and environmental services. Using experiences of land expansion in Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, and sub-Saharan Africa, it assesses the extent to which recent demand for land differs from earlier processes of area expansion and identifies the current challenges, in terms of land governance, institutional capacity and communities’ awareness of their rights.

    Large-scale land acquisitions can have lasting repercussions for the future of agriculture, including both agribusiness and family farming. Rather than rushing into land deals, governments and investors should properly consider the wider range of options to invest in agriculture. In many parts of the world, family farmers have proved efficient and dynamic. Working with them can generate healthy returns, avoid the risks associated with land acquisitions, and improve farmers’ livelihoods.

    Moçambique localiza-se na costa sudueste de África, com uma área de cerca de 799.380 Km1 e uma linha costeira de cerca de 2.515 Km ao longo do Oceano Índico, constituindo um espaço vital tanto para o país assim como para os países vizinhos situados no interior que só têm acesso às vias oceânicas através dos portos moçambicanos. Em termos de fronteiras, o país faz limite, a Norte, com a República Unida da Tazânia, a Oeste com o Malawi, Zâmbia, Zimbabwe, Suazilândia e República da Àfrica do Sul; a Sul, faz divisa com a Àfrica do Sul, países com os quais partilha cerca de 4.330Km.

    The recent upsurge in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in land raises the hope to bridge the gap of decades of underinvestment in developing countries’ agricultural sector, but it may also threaten host countries’ food security and increase the vulnerability of the rural population. Based on four country case studies conducted by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), this article illustrates distinct impacts of large-scale investments in agricultural land.
