The FAO Inland Water Resources and Aquaculture Service (FIRI) has been active in promoting the use of geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing in fisheries and aquaculture since 1985. However, a manual to use along with GIS software for the fisheries biologists in the field explaining GIS in a way that is understandable to non-GIS users had not been produced until now. This manual was written to overcome this knowledge-gap, it is a “do-it-yourself-manual” giving a short introduction to GIS software and its applications in fishery science.

World agriculture: towards 2015/2030 is FAO’s latest assessment of the long-term outlook for the world’s food supplies, nutrition and agriculture. It presents the projections and the main messages. The projections cover supply and demand for the major agricultural commodities and sectors, including fisheries and forestry. This analysis forms the basis for a more detailed examination of other factors, such as nutrition and undernourishment, and the implications for international trade.

The overall aim of the present Forestry Development Master Plan is to provide a basis for achieving sustainable utilization and development of forest and wildlife resources, modernization of the timber industry and conservation of the environment, and thereby ensure realization of the objectives of the Forest and Wildlife Policy. This Act makes provision for the administration of districts, i.e. an area under the authority of a district assembly, a municipality or metropolis. Existing districts shall continue as districts for the purposes of this Act and new districts may be declared by the President by Executive Instrument.The Minister shall establish for each district, municipality or metropolis existing or created under this Act a District Assembly. The Act defines functions and powers of District Assemblies and provides rules for their functioning.
