Strong evidence indicates that the Brazilian government is taking advantage of the confusion caused by the Covid-19 pandemic to speed-up a wide-ranging environmental setback. We present a timeline of policies and acts taken by the current federal administration against the environment during the pandemic and discuss their consequences. In this beginning of century, Brazil has, on one hand, a high economic growth, strong institutions in various areas and improvement of social situation, but, on the other hand, the rural and urban land situation is still very precarious, with elementary issues that are not resolved and that most developed countries solved them still in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Brazil has become an agricultural powerhouse, producing roughly 30 % of the world’s soy and 15 % of its beef by 2013 – yet historically much of that growth has come at the expense of its native ecosystems. Since 1985, pastures and croplands have replaced nearly 65 Mha of forests and savannas in the legal Amazon. A growing body of work suggests that this paradigm of horizontal expansion of agriculture over ecosystems is outdated and brings negative social and environmental outcomes.

O território do norte paraense possui 270.040,7 km², distribuídos em nove municípios: Alenquer, Almeirim, Curuá, Faro, Monte Alegre, Óbidos, Oriximiná, Prainha e Terra Santa. Tal área ocupa 22% do estado do Pará, o equivalente à soma dos estados de São Paulo e Sergipe (IBGE, 2019). Em 2019, esse território abrigava uma população estimada em apenas 344.385 habitantes (4% da população total do Pará). Além disso, seu incremento populacional tem ficado abaixo da média do restante do estado. De fato, a população do Norte do Pará aumentou somente 51.480 habitantes entre os anos 2000 e 2019.
