In the face of increasing socio-economic and climatic pressures in growing cities, it is rational for managers to consider multiple approaches for securing water availability. One often disregarded option is the promotion of reforestation in source regions supplying important quantities of atmospheric moisture transported over long distances through aerial rivers, affecting water resources of a city via precipitation and runoff (‘smart reforestation’). Here we present a case demonstrating smart reforestation’s potential as a water management option.

Problems with governance of forests are closely linked to incompatible interests between different stakeholders. Having a clearer understanding of the relative importance of forest landscape functions among stakeholders can bring much clarity about why governance problems persist. The voice of the weakest actors is often insufficiently heard in decision-making processes that affect how stakeholders can use forests.

Os assentamentos de reforma agrária têm assumido um papel de destaque em relação ao desmatamento da Amazônia nos últimos cinco anos. Atualmente cerca de 8% do território dos estados amazônicos (41,8 milhões de hectares) encontra-se destinado aos 3.589 assentamentos de reforma agrária.

El presente Decreto Supremo aprueba la Estrategia Nacional de Lucha contra la Desertificación y la Sequía (ENLCDS), un instrumento de gestión multisectorial, de alcance nacional cuyo objetivo general es el de prevenir y reducir la desertificación, la degradación de la tierra y el impacto de la sequía en el territorio nacional, considerando un horizonte de planificación de 15 años (2016-2030).

El presente Acuerdo modifica el Procedimiento para la adjudicación de tierras del patrimonio forestal del Estado y bosques y vegetación protectores, en lo relacionado con la distinción entre las tierras adjudicadas que corresponden al Patrimonio Forestal del Estado, que quedan deslindadas de dicho Patrimonio, y aquellas que corresponden a los bosques y vegetación protectores que cambiarán únicamente de dominio y seguirán formando parte del mismo bosque y vegetación protector.

As Unidades de Conservação cobrem 22% da Amazônia Legal e são uma estratégia eficaz para conservar animais, plantas e serviços ambientais, conter o desmatamento e manter o equilíbrio climático do Planeta. Contudo, as taxas de desmatamento em UCs vêm aumentando – em 2015 já superava a de 2012 em 79% –, assim como sua participação no desmatamento total da Amazônia, que passou de 6% em 2008 para 12% em 2015.

El presente Acuerdo aprueba el Procedimiento para la adjudicación de tierras del patrimonio forestal del Estado y bosques y vegetación protectores, cuyo objetivo es el de establecer los parámetros para la adjudicación de tierras del Estado y bosques y vegetación protectores de propiedad del Estado por parte del Ministerio del Ambiente.
