La résilience climatique mondiale est une question de vie ou de mort. Dans les paysages forestiers, 1,3 milliard de petits exploitants agricoles, de communautés et de peuples autochtones doivent organiser leur résilience climatique pour survivre. Du fait qu’ils sont coresponsables de la gestion d’une grande partie des forêts restantes et de l’approvisionnement alimentaire d’une nombreuse population pauvre à travers le monde, leur résilience est également essentielle aux solutions climatiques mondiales.
Shifting cultivation is a dominant form of farming in the eastern Himalayas, practised by a diverse group of indigenous people from the most marginalized social and economic groups. The survival of these indigenous people and the survival of their forests are inextricably linked. However, policy makers and natural resource managers perceive shifting cultivation to be wasteful, destructive to forests, and unsustainable.

The increasing expansion of cropland is major driver of global carbon emissions and biodiversity loss. However, predicting plausible future global distributions of croplands remains challenging. Here, we show that, in general, existing global data aligned with classical economic theories of expansion explain the current (1992) global extent of cropland reasonably well, but not recent expansion (1992–2015).
Land is very important natural resource to the human being as it provides the basis for more than 95% of human food. On the broader context, land has many other functions, e.g. provision of biological habitats and physical and connective space; regulation of hydrology and climate; storage of minerals, raw materials and historical/pre-historical records; and as a buffer to control waste and pollution. Expanding human requirements and economic activities are placing ever increasing pressures on land resources, creating competition and conflicts and resulting in suboptimal use of land.
En el presente documento se analizan los principales temas relacionados con el desarrollo agropecuario y rural, y la situación del medio ambiente y los recursos naturales de América Latina y el Caribe en el período 1990 a 2005. El documento está estructurado en torno a cinco ejes temáticos: i) desarrollo productivo; ii) deforestación; iii) degradación y desertificación; iv) factores sociales y demográficos, pobreza, ingreso y empleo, y cambios poblacionales, y v) cambio climático y desastres naturales.
