    Dit rapport vormt een naslagwerk bij de Natuurbalans 2006. Het geeft een overzicht van de gegevens die het LEI in opdracht van het Milieu- en Natuurplanbureau ten behoeve van de Natuurbalans 2006 heeft geïnventariseerd en geanalyseerd. De aandacht gaat daarbij uit naar veranderingen in het landschap tussen 1990 en 2005, met een focus op de dynamiek in grondgebruik en grondgebruikers in het landelijk gebied in de afgelopen 15 jaar. In an assessment of all 15 CGIAR Centers (based on science quality and relevance, impacts, partnerships, and financial and institutional health), conducted by the CGIAR in collaboration with the Science Council and the World Bank, ICARDA was rated outstanding" - one of only two centers to receive this rating.

    In dit rapport wordt een begripsdefinitie en een operationele definitie gegeven van `verrommeling¿. In de 72 1 x 1 km grids, die ook in de Steekproef Landschap worden gebruikt, is een oordeel gegeven aan de mate van verrommeling. Dit is gerelateerd aan het vóórkomen van storende elementen, de uitstraling ervan en aan landschapskenmerken zoals de afwisseling in gebruiksfuncties. Driekwart van de variantie in verrommelingsscore blijkt uit deze bepalende factoren te kunnen worden verklaard.

    Drylands have potential for economic activity now markets are emerging for natural products such as aloe or gum Arabic. However it is difficult to take advantage of these opportunities because there is a lack of structure for this market. A regulatory framework providing an enabling environment for increasing investment in the sustainable use and management of land and natural resources would be beneficial.

    "The Lore Lindu region in Indonesia—as in many forest frontier areas in Southeast Asia—has experienced rapid deforestation due to agricultural expansion in the uplands, at the forest margins. This has resulted in aggravated problems of erosion and water availability, threatening agricultural productivity growth. At the same time, technical progress is promoting agricultural intensification in the lowlands. In this article, we examine how improved technologies for paddy rice cultivation in the lowlands have affected agricultural expansion and deforestation in the uplands.
