Improving the methods and tools to work drectly with food-insecure households is critical. For decades, growth monitoring has been practised by community health workers in many developing countries. An analysis of the present state of forest plantations and of current trends in plantation forestry both on a global basis and region-by-region. Economic and policy considerations in the development of plantation forestry are discussed. The outlook for plantation forestry is then presented in the form of alternative scenarios according to future growth in plantation area.

In its recent examination of global water scarcity (1997) the United Nations system identified water quality as one of the key concerns in Asia in the next century. This concern is based on the fact that water quality degradation is so severe in many Asian countries that it is placing serious constraints on economic growth; it continues to be a serious problem for human health and it is causing widespread negative environmental effects.

In many countries around the world, people living in rural areas have lower incomes and are generally less prosperous than their urban counterparts. Because of this, governments often attempt to promote rural development through the development of natural resources such as forests. This paper will attempt to describe some of the challenges of using forest resources for rural development in developing countries.
