    The use of satellite imagery can substantially improve knowledge on changes in forest area as a result of deforestation, afforestation and natural forest expansion. This summary outlines some of the initial findings on forest land use and land-use change of a global remote sensing survey carried out to complement the country reporting process as part of the Global Forest Resources Assessments led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

    The FAO Strategic Framework 2000-2015 identifies five major corporate strategies to be followed by the Organization. Corporate strategy D, “Conserving and Enhancing Sustainable use of the Natural Resource Base”, is broken down into two strategic objectives: D1 “Integrated Management of Land, Water, Fisheries, Forest and Genetic Resources” and D2 “Conservation, Rehabilitation and Development of Environments at the Greatest Risk”.

    En el Marco Estratégico para la FAO 2000-2015 se establecen las cinco principales estrategias institucionales que ha de seguir la Organización. La estrategia D de la FAO, “Conservar y mejorar el uso sostenible de la base de recursos naturales”, se ha desglosado en dos objetivos estratégicos: D1 “Ordenación integrada de la tierra, el agua y los recursos pesqueros, forestales y genéticos” y D2 “Conservación, rehabilitación y desarrollo de los entornos expuestos a mayores riesgos”.
