    Canada has long been an active and generous resource partner, working closely with FAO in support of a wide range of shared food security and agricultural development goals. Mutual priority themes include child and maternal nutrition, land tenure and resilience building – with much of Canada’s recent cooperation with FAO having been in response to emergencies where host governments have prioritized FAO’s recovery projects. Canadian expertise and staffing resources are also an important asset for FAO.

Many of the over 800 million people in the world who still go hungry live in water-scarce regions. When FAO launched its Special Programme for Food Security in 1994, it was well aware that limited access to water was often a major constraint to increasing food production.

    In 1978 the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) published a Systematic Index of International Water Resources Treaties, Declarations, Acts and Cases by Basin (Legislative Study No. 15). The Index covered some 2000 international legal instruments the earliest dating from the year 805 and the most recent 1977.

    Cooperation between Tajikistan and FAO has been ongoing since the country joined the Organization in 1995. FAO<p></p>assistance was initially provided in the form of short-term emergency interventions in response to a locust outbreak and<p></p>also to help the transition to stability after a period of civil war. More recently, cooperation has focused on rehabilitation<p></p>and development interventions to build a sustainable agriculture sector and food and nutrition security.

    Sustainable Development Goal 1, ending poverty in all its forms, everywhere, is the most ambitious goal set by the 2030 Agenda. This Goal includes eradicating extreme poverty in the next 12 years, which will require more focused actions in addition to broad-based interventions. The question is: How can we achieve target 1.1 and overcome the many challenges that lie ahead? By gaining a deeper understanding of poverty, and the characteristics of the extreme rural poor in particular, the right policies can be put in place to reach those most in need.
