    The report “Transforming the livestock sector through the sustainable development goals” examines the sector’s interaction with each of the SDGs, as well as the potential synergies, trade-offs, and complex interlinkages involved.     Geographical indication (GI) schemes can play a special role in promoting sustainable rural development, improving farm income and opening new export potential. Natural factors such as soil, climate and plant varieties play a major role in producing a unique product. Usually, GIs comprise knowledge and skills passed on from generation to generation, helping to protect local heritage. This report is a synthesis of the five national reviews of the legal and institutional frameworks in Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, the Republic of Moldova, and the Russian Federation.

Many of the over 800 million people in the world who still go hungry live in water-scarce regions. When FAO launched its Special Programme for Food Security in 1994, it was well aware that limited access to water was often a major constraint to increasing food production.

    Canada has long been an active and generous resource partner, working closely with FAO in support of a wide range of shared food security and agricultural development goals. Mutual priority themes include child and maternal nutrition, land tenure and resilience building – with much of Canada’s recent cooperation with FAO having been in response to emergencies where host governments have prioritized FAO’s recovery projects. Canadian expertise and staffing resources are also an important asset for FAO.

    Poland was one of the 44 founding members of FAO, participating in the Hot Spring Conference in 1943 as well as in the FAO founding conference in Quebec City on 16 October 1945. FAO’s shared history of cooperation with the Government of Poland has focused on projects that improve the safety and efficiency of the Polish food system. In recent years, Poland has transitioned from a recipient to a donor country, recently funding an FAO study on best practices for emergency preparedness.

Irrigation trends, existing policies and legislation to water use in agriculture, possible treaties and agreements between countries as well as prospects for water management in agriculture are presented, as described in literature.
