Variations in availability and nutritional quality of feed resources in the tropics affect cattle production under smallholder production systems. This results in undernutrition of cattle because of fluctuations in feed and nutrient supply. The term undernutrition is very complex and not clearly understood. The end products from animal production in the forms of body growth, milk yield, reproduction and traction power are expressed as a result of the influence of undernutrition. The mechanisms involved in physiological changes need to be understood.

  2. Library Resource
    Conference Papers & Reports
    December, 1999

A project proposal whose aim is to promote more appropriate resource management on smallholder crop-livestock farms in East Africa is described. Prototypes of mixed farming systems will be developed to characterise farming systems according to their management objectives. These prototypes will then be used to map improvements of the farming systems by combining prototyping and simulation modelling. Scenarios will be explored to assess natural resource management interventions that promote sustainability of these prototype-farming systmes.

    Ethiopia, Africa, Eastern Africa

Formulation of cost-effective preventive control programmes for helminth infection in small ruminants should be based on sound epidemiological knowledge of the time relationship between contamination of pastures and the seasonal availability of infective larvae in a given geographic area. Epidemiological data generated from an on-station experiment involving the use of tracer lambs and monitoring of pasture contamination levels in the central Ethiopian highlands clearly showed a distinct seasonal pattern of nematode infection in sheep.

    Conference Papers & Reports
    July, 2006
    India, Asia, Southern Asia

This workshop was conducted to assess the development prospects of India's livestock in the context of changing global economic environment and its impact on the rural poor, and to suggest politically feasible and practical strategies and approaches for pro-poor growth in livestock production. An additional aim of the workshop was to explore possibilities of enhanced research collaboration between the national agricultural research systems (NARS) and ILRI.

  5. Library Resource
    Conference Papers & Reports
    December, 1988

Presents papers dealing with the use of crop residues as livestock feed in smallholder crop/livestock farming systems, and the role of plant breeding in maintaining or improving their nutritive value. Discusses factors limiting the nutritive value of crop residues, and the effect of genotype and environment on the nutritive value of crop residues. Outlines perspectives and implications for crop improvement programmes. Includes recommendations.
