In this paper we evaluate the potential of ENVISAT–Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) fused images for land-cover mapping and vegetation status assessment in heterogeneous landscapes. A series of MERIS fused images (15 spectral bands; 25 m pixel size) is created using the linear mixing model and a Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) image acquired over the Netherlands. First, the fused images are classified to produce a map of the eight main land-cover types of the Netherlands. Subsequently, the maps are validated using the Dutch land-cover/land-use database as a reference.

Although developments in remote sensing have greatly improved land cover mapping, the mixed pixel problem has not yet been fully addressed. Soft classification techniques have been introduced to address the problem, but they do not show the spatial location of the class proportions in a pixel. Subpixel mapping has been introduced to address the drawbacks of soft classifications. In this work, the feedforward backpropagating neural network (FFBPNN) was used for subpixel mapping.

The paper presents a case study in which land use strategies to mitigate Climate Change effects are developed for a model in Saxony, Germany. In this region, the degree of freedom to respond to Climate Change with land-cover changes is very small. Based on a participatory process, an approach was developed to extend land-cover classes (e.g. forest, agriculture) by land management classes. In this paper, the focus is on the forest management classification.
