The objective of the gender and climate training guide is to address the lack of information on how men and women adapt to, and mitigate climate change. The Participatory Action Research methods and activities of the guide help ensure that gender is reflected in research activities and outcomes. The guide will help promote gender-sensitive adaptation and mitigation activities in projects for agriculture and food security.

    The Global Forest Resources Assessment Update 2005 was specially mandated by the Committee on Forestry (COFO) during its meeting in 2003, where member countries endorsed recommendations from an Expert Consultation held in the Kotka, Finland in 2002 (Kotka IV). For this purpose all countries have been requested to provide national reports to FAO during 2004. As in previous global assessments, FRA 2005 relies on contributions by countries and a network of National Correspondents to FRA has been established.

    The present issue of Forest Genetic Resources (FGR) goes to press immediately following the Eleventh World Forestry Congress held in Turkey 13-22 October 1997, which more than 4000 colleagues from 145 countries attended. In regard to the conservation and use of forest genetic resources, the Congress, in its deliberations and report, stressed that action to conserve, manage, sustainably utilize and enhance forest genetic resources is an urgent priority.

    This report describes the potential for inland fish farming among the Caribbean Island States based on methods used in an earlier study (“A strategic assessment of the potential for freshwater fish farming in Latin America”, COPESCAL Technical Paper, No. 10, 1997) to estimate freshwater fish farming potential in Latin America. Four criteria were used to estimate potential for small-scale fish farming in ponds: water loss, potential for farm gate sales, soil and terrain suitability for ponds and availability of agriculture by-products as feed or fertilizer inputs.

    This report presents the results of an analysis of economic rent from roundwood production in Suriname. It starts by describing the concept of economic rent: what it means; how it is calculated; and why it is so important. it then presents the results of the economic rent analysis and presents some recommendations for forest charges in Suriname. Later sections describe some ways to improve the efficiency and profitability of the forestry sector in Suriname and some ways that current constraints may be overcome.
