    Rice-fish farming: A food security alternative Rice-fish farming is a biological or clean production system that consists of the simultaneous farming of rice and fish on the same land and at the same time; in other words, in the plots flooded for rice cultivation. Rice is the main product and has greater economic importance, whereas the fish is both a source of additional income and a protein supplement that improves the nutritional quality of farmers’ diets.

    Soil management in the Altillanura of Colombia’s Eastern Plains The strategies used for adequate soil management for the Altillanura (high plains with flat topography) of Colombia’s Eastern Plains are reviewed to establish modern, efficient, and sustainable livestock systems in this region. Advances in technology development within the technical and scientific cooperation agreement signed between Colombia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) and CIAT, as well as those of the Center’s Soils Project and several national institutions co-partners in the agreement.

    Remote Sensing has contributed to forest and landscape management. The technology, which includes sensors, processing software and analysis, has been extensively studied and applied. Studies that employed remote sensing have improved understanding of the sites studied. At the strategic level of forest planning, or in general planning for forest resource allocation over a wide area, remote sensing can play an important role in estimating and monitoring forest cover.

    The Yellow River Basin (YRB) Focal Project set out to study water poverty, water

    availability and access, water productivity, and water and related institutions in the

    Yellow River basin to develop and rank a series of high-priority interventions aimed at

    increasing water and food security for the poor, while maintaining environmental

    sustainability. The YBFP identified complex relations between water and poverty in the

    YRB; identified streamflow declines in the basin despite predicted higher rainfall;

    This paper applies the principles of water-use accounts, developed in the first of the series, to the Nile River basin in Northeast Africa. The Nile and its tributaries flow though nine countries. The White Nile flows though Uganda, Sudan, and Egypt. The Blue Nile starts in Ethiopia. Zaire, Kenya, Tanzanian, Rwanda, and Burundi all have tributaries, which flow into the Nile or into Lake Victoria.

    This paper applies the principles of water-use accounts, developed in the first of the

    series, to the Indus River basin in South Asia. The Indus Basin covers 3 countries, rises

    in the Tibetan plateau in the vicinity of Lake Mansarovar in China. Irrigated agriculture

    in the Basin is extensive with the construction of dams, barrages, and link canals to

    distribute water, with modern engineering to support irrigation starting as early as the

    mid 1800s.

    Net runoff is about 10% of total precipitation. Irrigated agriculture covers 20% of

    This paper applies the principles of water-use accounts, to the Karkheh River basin in Iran.

    The northern part of the Basin where the Karkheh and its tributaries rise is mountainous, cooler, and wetter. The River spills out on to the hotter, lower semi-arid plains at its southern end. Precipitation, mainly in winter, varies from 400-500 mm in the upper part of the Basin falling to about 230 mm in the lower reaches.
