Population pressures play less of a role in deforestation than earlier studies of Thailand found. Between 1976 and 1989, Thailand lost 28 percent ofits forest cover. To analyze how road building, population pressure, and geophysical factors affected deforestation in Thailand during that period, Cropper, Griffiths, and Mani develop a model in whichthe amount of land cleared, the number of agricultural households, and the size of the road network are jointly determined. The model assumes that the amount of land cleared reflects an equilibrium in the land market.

For much of the world's tropical population, coral reefs are synonymous with reef fish and edible marine invertebrates. Reef-related fisheries are important to small-scale fisherfolk, as a source of both protein and livelihood security for local coastal communities. In all of Asia, coral reef resources play a role in the food and livelihood security of coastal communities. Perhaps nowhere in Asia in this role more important than in the Maldives.

The Regional Workshop convened by M S Swaminathan Research Foundation in collaboration with the Bay of Bengal Programme of FAO (BOBP) is designed to address these issues and to develop an action plan for saving the remaining coral reefs in the SAARC region. Since its establishment in 1989, M S S R F has given priority attention to the conservation and sustainable use of Coastal Mangrove ecosystems. This paper reviews various methodologies for forest valuation and describes how they have been used in the preparation of forestry investment projects and programmes. It confirms that many potentially good valuation methodologies exist and it presents summaries of most of the main methodologies used. The document highlights other important considerations that have to be considered in any analysis (e.g. distribution of costs and benefits, different perceptions of value). It also reveals that valuation is not widely used at the moment in forestry project preparation.

This study focuses on the current situation, trends and likely developments of forest resources to 2010. Forest areas, growing stocks, increments and fellings are reviewed on a country basis. Roundwood supply is analysed from two points of view: roundwood production potential and roundwood felling (removal). The working paper attempts to assess the potential productive capacity and fellings for both fuelwood and industrial wood use taking account of the impact of changes in the agricultural frontier and population growth.
