    Report 1 documents key data affecting crop budgets and water supply costs in several Olifants Basin irrigation schemes. The data will be used to develop an irrigation water-pricing model to describe supply-side and demand side forces. Report 2 investigates the management and operations of these schemes. It compares farming and irrigation practices in several different types of schemes - a government-run scheme, a private commercial scheme and two small irrigation schemes managed by black farmers.

    Because of increasing water scarcity in developing countries, poor people are suffering greatly from ?water deprivation.? One approach to improving water resources management is to develop river basin management institutions. This paper contrasts government-dominated approaches to forming such institutions with attempts to create stakeholder-based institutions. Two cases of the latter, in Mexico and South Africa, are compared to extract lessons for other countries.

    An analysis of the present state of forest plantations and of current trends in plantation forestry both on a global basis and region-by-region. Economic and policy considerations in the development of plantation forestry are discussed. In many African countries, in addition to low yields, food production is limited by the availability of land and water resources.
