This document is a background paper for the discussions on Forest Ecosystem Services and financing Sustainable Forest Management. It provides some specific examples of market mechanisms for trading Forest Ecosystem Services in clean water provision, recreation opportunities, biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation through forest-based carbon sequestration and product substitution.
El presente es un documento de antecedentes destinado a los debates relativos a los servicios ecosistémicos forestales y la financiación de la gestión forestal sostenible. En él se proporcionan algunos ejemplos concretos de mecanismos de mercado para comercializar servicios ecosistémicos forestales en lo que respecta al suministro de agua limpia, oportunidades para la recreación, la conservación de la biodiversidad y la mitigación de los efectos del cambio climático por medio de la sustitución de productos y la fijación de carbono basadas en los bosques.
El presente documento es la segunda actualización del informe original de la FAO sobre este tema. Ofrece información sobre la contribución del sector forestal a las economías nacionales a nivel mundial, regional y nacional. This paper reviews the experiences of introducing land consolidation and land banking instruments in Central and Eastern Europe, largely to address the structural problems of small and fragmented farms. The introduction has been uneven with some countries having established operational programmes while others have taken steps with differing levels of success, and a few have not taken action. The paper assesses the driving factors for the introduction and the approaches used in individual countries.

This thematic issue on land tenure and disaster risk management (DRM) stems from the recent work done at FAO on normative aspects of land tenure governance that address natural disasters through the DRM framework. The Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security provide, among other issues, guidance on improving tenure governance and strengthening tenure security of vulnerable people in line with the DRM framework.
