This video documents the struggle of sugarcane farmers of Valencia, Bukidnon, Philippines in claiming their rights to the land they have long been cultivating. It tells how farmers were harassed by the former landowner who, despite notice of redistribution under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP), wanted to hold on to the land and continued to force evict them.
Looking at several large-scale land deals in Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia, this extraordinary documentary highlights the nuanced impacts of these investments. Small-scale farmers and producers, national government officials, and African policy-makers unpack the deals, showing that there are winners and losers when providing investors access to large tracts of land in Africa. For example, land deals impact differently on women and youth, and altering land regimes also impacts on access to other natural resources such as water, fish, and local indigenous vegetables.
This video is based on the combined efforts of 5 civil society organizations and ethnic youth organizations (88 Generation, Point, FLU, KYO&TSYU) to document local Customary Tenure practices in different villages throughout the country, in the states of Shan North, Shan South, Magwe and Kayah, with the support of MRLG. It’s explains how they implemented the documentation of Customary Tenure practices. The video also explains what customary tenure is, based on the local communities point of view and practices, and why CT recognition is important to them.
‘Voices from the mine’ is a new 33-minute documentary film by University of Bath researcher, Dr Roy Maconachie. It focuses on resource governance in Sierra Leone's artisanal diamond mining sector, tracing the pathway of diamonds from pit to market, and documenting the stories of different stakeholders along the way. In doing so, the film depicts the challenges of local level governance in the sector, shows why benefits do not accrue to those working at the bottom of the chain, and sheds light on why it is so difficult to formalize artisanal mining.
