    Land Tenure Working Paper 20. This paper presents an analysis of communal tenure and its role for natural resource management system, in different contexts of selected Asian countries. The current market driven pressures on natural resources create both challenges and opportunities for communities and governments to use and strengthen communal tenure in order to promote sustainable management of some natural resources.

    The National Medium-Term Priority Framework (NMTPF) 2011-2015 builds on the experience acquired with NMTPF 20006-2010, which dealt with FAO assistance in a comprehensive way. Its overall goal is to pursue the development of sustainable agriculture, fisheries and forestry as a contribution to the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, improving the living standards of all Cambodians, especially the poorest, most food insecure, most vulnerable, in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable manner.

    The study conducted by FAO and partners in South and Southeast Asia was based on an analysis of forest tenure according to two variables: the type of ownership, and the level of control of and access to resources. It aimed to take into account the complex combination of forest ownership − whether legally or customarily defined − and arrangements for the management and use of forest resources. Forest tenure determines who can use what resources, for how long and under what conditions.

    The document is a compilation of detailed statistics on farming, livestock, fishery, forestry and nutrition in Asia-Pacific countries for the above period. The seventeenth issue of the series shows the changes in land use, farm inputs, and production indices for staple food crops - rice, wheat, maize, millet, cereals, cassava, a range of root and tuber crops, pulses, edible oil and fibre crops, fruit and cash crops like rubber and coffee. It also compares changes in livestock, fisheries and forestry production, agricultural trade and nutritional availability and intake for this period.
