    This report presents some of the highlights of ILCA's research and training and information programme. The highlight described for the Cattle Milk and Meat Thrust focuses on helping national agricultural research systems (NARS) make better use of their livestock production data. The highlights of both the Small Ruminant Meat and Milk Thrust and the Animal Traction Thrust center on crop-livestock integration, integrating forage legumes into the farming systems of the Sahel and the subhumid zone of West Africa. The traction thrust focuses on ILCA's work in the Ethiopian highlands.

    Organisation of the dairy industry and the marketing system in Kenya is highlighted and marketing and pricing of milk in Kenya is discussed. The formal and the informal milk marketing subsystems are also discussed. The Kenya Cooperative Creameries Limited (KCC) handles most of the marketed milk that is not sold and consumed in the rural areas. A major role of the KCC is to receive, process and distribute fresh milk (as pasteurised milk) on a daily basis.

    Presents papers discussing the potential for impacts within ILCA's organisational framework and mandate. The introductory paper raises general issues and poses questions that are pursued in the other papers. These papers address the environmental, economic and social components of impact within the organisation. Case studies on ILCA's research on tenure policy and alley farming, forage legumes, animal traction, milk processing, hay making and studies on pricing policies, technology generation and ILCA's research networks are presented in the papers.

    The systems of livestock production, marketing and research have been profoundly transformed by recent policies in Central Asia since the break up of the Soviet Union. Decollectivisation of state farms has transferred livestock ownership to new private farming units. These receive little or no state support for inputs, or for processing and selling livestock products. Most livestock-keeping families have much-reduced incomes compared to the Soviet period.

Another nine describe and analyse feeds and feeding systems and there are 11 papers on Small Ruminant Genetic Resources and Breeding. Four papers on Small Ruminant Development in Africa complete this volume.

    These are the Proceedings of the last joint workshop of the Pasture Network for Eastern and Southern Africa (PANESA) and the African Research Network for Agricultural Byproducts (ARNAB), held in Gaborone, Botswana, 4-8 March 1991. This volume contains the three addresses delivered at the opening session together with 38 full texts and 12 abstracts of papers presented at the workshop. The scientific papers are grouped in three sections, corresponding to the main themes of the workshop.
