    This Act grants the power to the Minister responsible for ports and harbours to carry out construction of coast protection works as he/she deems urgently necessary and to apportion costs of such works on the owners of any land who benefit from such works. The owners will contribute in the degree that they benefit from the work. Various rules are provided for the apportionment of costs and the payment of compensation.

    This Act provides rules relative to the holding of title and other rights in land by persons other than a permanent resident or other than persons acquiring land or an interest in land under a devise or by inheritance (“Non-Bahamian”) and makes provision for control by the State on the holding of title in land in the Bahamas by foreigners. Acquisition of land, other than by non-Bahamians, shall be registered with the Secretary of the Investments Board, which is established under this Act.

    This Act provides rules relative to the holding of any real or personal property in joint tenancy by companies. A body corporate shall be capable of acquiring and holding any real or personal property in joint tenancy in the same manner as if it were an individual provided that the acquisition and holding of property by a body corporate in joint tenancy shall be subject to the like conditions and restrictions as attach to the acquisition and holding of property by a body corporate in severalty.

    This Act makes provision for the registration of commoners, i.e. persons that hold a right in non-partitioned land together with at least other twenty people and other aspects of organization of commoners and protection of their rights.A register of commoners shall be formed and kept in each town or settlement in which any land is held in common. Commoners shall meet in accordance with this Act and may make rules for specified purposes regarding the use of the common land, the supply of fresh water and the protection of produce.

    This Act prescribes that the Ministry of Agriculture shall be considered to act as a corporation in dealings and legal proceedings regarding agricultural land. Sale and long-term lease of agricultural land are excluded from provisions of this Act. The Act also requires the Minister to report to parliament on dealings involving agricultural land.

    This Act makes provision for the registration and the licensing of land surveyors and the control of their practice and establishes for these purposes the Land Surveyor’s Board and the Bahamas Association of Land Surveyors and creates the office of the Surveyor-General.The Surveyor-General shall direct and control all surveys carried out for public purposes and carry out control on all other land surveys. The Board shall advise the Minister on matters regarding land surveys, maintain the Register of Land Surveyors and license land surveyors.
