This edition of the journal has set out to explore the theme " Forests and People: Investing in Africa’s Sustainable Future”. The academia, research, development community, civil society and individuals working in the forestry sector and related fields are contributing short articles to this edition of the journal. Authors explore the topic from varying perspectives and share their experiences, challenges and dreams on the future of Africa’s forests as they relate to African people and their sustainable future.
La sécurité de la tenure est une condition essentielle à la gestion durable des forêts. La diversification des systèmes de tenure pourrait servir de base à l’amélioration de l’aménagement forestier et des moyens d’existence locaux, en particulier là où l’Etat ne dispose pas des moyens suffisants pour gérer les forêts. Au cours de la dernière décennie, de nombreux pays ont entamé des efforts de réforme de leurs systèmes de tenure forestière, en déléguant certains droits d’accès et de gestion aux ménages, aux sociétés privées et aux communautés.
Este número doble de Unasylva busca desentrañar las complejas relaciones que median entre bosques, árboles y desastres, y examinar las mejores formas en que los bosques y árboles pueden gestionarse tanto para resistir a las conmociones como para proteger contra ellas. Los bosques y árboles pueden sin embargo actuar como sistemas naturales de amortiguación frente a las catástrofes y perturbaciones. Desempeñan una función poderosa en la protección contra los desastres y la reducción de sus efectos.
In the context of developing a practicable and cost effective method for obtaining a country’s forest area by remote sensing, the computer processing of NOAA AVHRR HRPT data covering Liberia was investigated. The only cloud-free scene then recorded turned out to be severely and unevenly affected by atmospheric haze. To mitigate the effects of this, the country was divided into six areas (strata) of more uniform haze conditions.

La coupe illicite et le commerce qui en découle sont un problème complexe qui a de profondes répercussions environnementales, sociales et économiques. Diverses parties prenantes – au niveau local, national et international – s’attaquent au problème.
