This report presents the key findings on forest land use and land-use change between 1990 and 2005 from FAO’s 2010 Global Forest Resources Assessment Remote Sensing Survey.
It is the first report of its kind to present systematic estimates of global forest land use and change.
At the request of its member countries, FAO has been carrying out global forest resources assessments (FRA) since 1947, in collaboration with countries and other partners, notably the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The global FRA reports on the worldwide status and trends of forest resources, their management and uses. It is based on nationally validated data from national forest inventories and assessments.
The Government of South Africa has a major holding of forest land, with a total estate
covering 892,000 ha of forest and associated land. Within the state's forest holding there is a
wide diversity of forest and land types including: commercial plantations and other afforested
land; indigenous forests; legally protected (indigenous) forest areas; and associated bare land.
This land is partly owned by the state and partly held on behalf of local communities, some of
